Shopping with children can sometimes (okay most times!) be intense. We had a morning of running errands and then grocery shopping. Both of my boys had had enough so were testing the boundaries. I could feel the anxiety and stress sitting in my stomach. I wanted to just leave and run away from the situation but I knew I had to just persevere. I could hear the frustration and stress in my voice as I was talking to them. I was aware of exactly how I was feeling and how my tone of voice sounded. I made a conscious effort to connect with my breath and sit with these feelings.
I was also aware that my mood would affect how the rest of my day flowed. In that moment, at the checkout, I made the last minute decision to buy myself some flowers.
Once I got home and before I unloaded all of the groceries, I put my flowers in a vase, lit a candle and played some soft music. Instant mood changer! Now as I sit down to write this post, my boys are calmly sitting at the table and colouring in. Calm mama, calm children!
The choice is always ours, mamas. If you have had a stressful start to the day, how can shift your current mood state? What works for one of us will not necessarily work the same for the next person and that is perfectly okay. Mindful awareness of your body, emotions and thoughts are so important in having the ability to change.
